The New Pastel School

Nel and Rebecca have created The New Pastel School after years of friendship and mutual respect for each other’s work. The courses offer the unusual experience of having two experienced pastel artists sharing the tuition, and combining their expertise and great enthusiasm for this versatile and exciting medium. As tutors and demonstrators they can help people see that there are always different ways to do things, even when working with the same pastels. Courses are available for all abilities. As well as learning skills and processes, students are inspired by demonstrations and encouraged to find their own way to work with the medium and develop their individual skills. Subject matter varies, as between them Rebecca and Nel have years of experience painting figures, portraits, animals, flowers, landscapes, still life, architecture and abstracts. They both feel that whatever the subject, its life, emotion and energy can be captured with pastels.

Shorlands Old Farm Exeter

‘The New and Improvers’ Shorlands Residential Course

Thurs 23rd March - Mon 27th March 2017

This course serves as an introduction to pastels but is also suitable for ‘improvers’ too and those wishing to take the next steps in developing their painting, and learning more. We will both be demonstrating as usual and will introduce some of the different types of pastels available and explore, in more depth than before, a range of different techniques and ways of using the medium. It is a refreshing chance to have a go at new ways of working, learn about colour and how to use it, and then enjoy the benefits of working from life and outdoors (weather permitting). Subject matter will vary.

Price for Shorlands New and Improvers Residential Course for 4 nights and 3 days; This includes 4 nights accommodation, all meals, 3 full days tuition and all materials. Arriving Thursday afternooon and departing Monday morning. Single £710. Shared occupancy £662. Non painting partner £268

The Watermill, Posara, Italy

NEW VENUE: The Watermill, Posara, Tuscany

DATES: Sat 23rd - Sat 30th September 2017

Bill and Lois Breckon have been running courses for some years at The Watermill and they kindly asked us to run a course in 2015 but we were already rather booked up. So we are delighted to say this will be our first trip! This is what they say about their lovely venue…

“For centuries artists have drawn their inspiration from the Tuscan landscape and you could find few better places to enjoy your art and improve your skills than the beautiful Watermill at Posara, set beside a river in a gentle valley.

You’ll stay in stylish bedrooms in elegant buildings around a sunlit courtyard. You’ll take leisurely breakfasts and enjoy mouth-watering evening meals at the mill (and also dine out in nearby restaurants to sample local dishes and wine tasting). The mills gardens, millstream and riverside walks are all yours to enjoy. Comments from previous students to this venue include…

“An enchanting place - I really loved it, endless delightful subjects to paint.”

“From the moment I stepped into my apartment and saw and heard the river, I realised it was going to be very special.”

“We’ve been on many painting holidays but this was the best ever.”
